STATE OF ALABAMA

PROCLAMATION

BY THE GOVERNOR



WHEREAS, Senator Jeff Sessions resigned from his office as United States Senator effective at 11:55 p.m. EST, February 8, 2017;



WHEREAS, under the United States Constitution and the laws of the State of Alabama, former Governor Robert Bentley made a temporary appointment to hold the office of the United States Senator until a successor to Senator Sessions is elected and qualified;



WHEREAS, on February 14, 2017, Governor Robert Bentley, issued a statewide Proclamation calling for a special election to be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018;



WHEREAS, on April 10, 2017, Governor Robert Bentley resigned his position as Governor of the State of Alabama;



WHEREAS, on April 10, 2017, I, Kay Ivey, was sworn into office as Governor of Alabama;



WHEREAS, under the Constitution and laws of the State of Alabama, it is my duty as Governor, by proclamation, to call and set the dates for special elections to be held of qualified electors to elect a United States Senator of and from the State of Alabama to serve as Senator for the remainder of the term for which Senator Sessions was elected;



WHEREAS, due consideration should be given to the rights and privileges of the citizens of the State of Alabama to be afforded full representation in the United States Congress;



WHEREAS, all interested citizens and political parties should be allowed to reasonably participate therein;



WHEREAS, under the United States Constitution and the laws of the State of Alabama, I, Kay Ivey, as Governor, hereby recall and rescind the Proclamation issued by former Governor Robert Bentley on February 14, 2017, and issue a new Proclamation proclaiming a new date for the special election to the seat of United States Senator (this Proclamation supersedes and replaces the February 14, 2017 Proclamation of Governor Bentley as described above);



NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kay Ivey, as Governor of the State of Alabama, by virtue of the power and authority vested in me as Governor, do hereby proclaim and call the following dates for the statewide special election to be held for the purpose of electing a member to the United States Senate for the remainder of the term for which Senator Sessions was elected.



A Special Primary Election shall be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, if more than one candidate qualifies with either ofthe major political parties.



A Special Primary Runoff Election shall be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, if necessitated by one candidate, of any qualified political party, not receiving a majority of the votes cast in the Special Primary Election. The Special General Election shall be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.



FURTHERMORE, all candidates qualifying with major political parties should be advised that the last day for any candidate to qualify with their respective parties, regarding such election, will be Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. The major political parties shall certify their qualified candidates to the Secretary of State as soon as possible after the qualification deadline but by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2017.



FURTHERMORE, all independent candidates, and minor parties seeking ballot access are advised that their deadline for filing of the appropriate ballot access, petitions, and supporting paperwork with the Secretary of State shall be Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at 5:00 p.m.



FURTHERMORE, each of the minor political parties must submit the name of its nominee to the Secretary of State by the deadline of Tuesday, August 15,2017, at 5:00 p.m.
